Simon Backer is the founder and president of ZedCan Consulting Inc. ZedCan was established to allow Simon to help a variety of companies realize strategic and marketing opportunities. ZedCan has been successfully helping early-stage and established companies realize their full potential since 2004.
Prior to this, Simon served as a senior executive at Mobile Data Solutions Inc., MDSI in a range of positions including Senior VP Wireless Solutions, VP and GM of the Transportation Business. MDSI (now known as Ventyx) was a NASDAQ listed company which had built a very successful business supplying Mobile Workforce solutions to a variety of vertical markets. Prior to that, Simon was president and CEO of Retix Wireless a wireless software company located in Los Angeles, CA.
From 1984 to 1996, Simon worked at Mobile Data International (MDI) which was acquired by Motorola in 1988. Simon held a broad range of positions from customer project management through product management to general management allowing him to witness the growth of the wireless data industry from its infancy through the advent of public wireless data networks (e.g. DataTAC, CDPD, GSM , GPRS) to today’s burgeoning wireless internet.
Simon previously worked for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited where managed the development and field implementation of an advanced video surveillance system used in safeguarding the flow of fissile nuclear material through CANDU nuclear reactors. He has also served as a member of the British Columbia Premier's Advisory Council on Science and Technology as well as being an Advisory Board member of Vancouver based startups Clearigo Solutions,MyMobileSync., and CityDazz. Mr. Backer holds a B.Sc. in Applied Physics from Brunel University in the U.K.
In his spare time, Simon enjoys skiing, guitar, reading, traveling and real beer.
